It is widely considered the most popular game on earth. Played by millions of people from nearly every walk of life, and in nearly every nation, soccer – football or futbol as it is commonly known beyond the borders of the United States – is a sport that can be played by nearly anyone. At first glance it is hard to tell one soccer ball from another. Usually constructed in the same distinctive style, the trademark pentagonal and hexagonal panels make a soccer ball instantly recognizable. However, when you are trying to tell the difference between one ball and another, the first place to start is the cover.

In the past, full grain leather was used to make a top quality soccer ball, but real leather tends to absorb water easily, and a wet ball is a heavy ball that plays much differently than it was intended to play. Today, the first quality soccer balls are constructed from synthetic leather. Although there are many variations of synthetic leather, they are generally all a derivative of polyurethane or poly vinyl chloride. The best balls – those used in competition and by professionals – are almost always made of the polyurethane construction, while inexpensive practice balls are more likely to be poly vinyl chloride.

The way the panels of the soccer ball are stitched together is another indication of the quality of the ball. A high quality ball is going to be hand stitched with polyester cord or Kevlar reinforced polyester. Hand stitching allows the panels to be sewn tighter, which makes for a stronger and longer lasting soccer ball. Second-tier soccer balls are usually stitched as well, but the stitching is done by machine so it lacks the uncompromising quality that a hand stitched ball will possess. Inexpensive balls are usually not stitched at all, and instead are held together by gluing the panels onto the lining of the ball.

Soccer balls come in different sizes as well: Size 3, Size 4, and Size 5. Size 3 balls are the smallest balls and are typically used by players under the age of eight. Size 4 balls are the next size up, and players between the ages of eight and twelve use this size of ball. Size 5 balls are the standard size for adult play and are the standard size balls for all international play.

When shopping for a soccer ball it is important to have an eye for its size and construction. If you are unsure that the ball you are considering is of good quality, look to see if the ball is approved by either FIFA or NFHS. FIFA, Fédération Internationale de Football Association, and NFHS, the National Federation of State High School Association, both approve balls that meet the strict specifications that are outlined by each organization. If you purchase a ball that is approved by either governing body then you are almost assured of a ball that is of high quality in both construction and performance.

I know a lot of people think that working with grown-ups is a lot harder than working with children, because grown-ups already have a formed personality, they have their own experience with the game of soccer and each of them needs to be treated as an individual at all times. For me, soccer drills for young players are a lot harder to apply, because you don’t have a lot of options to take in your relationship with them.

With grown-ups, you can base your coaching on a close relationship with them, on severity, professionalism, honor and several other concepts that might or might not work well with a group (still, all these options might be viable). With kids on the other hand, you’re basically stuck with providing them with a fun environment to play in. You can’t be “hard” on a bunch of kids. Yell at them and they’ll leave crying and not come back to training again. It’s as simple as that, they’re sneaky :)

So if you’re stuck with fun soccer drills, let’s make sure you make them really fun, so that your team of youngsters can both enjoy them and learn from them at the same time. Before presenting a few fun soccer drills you could try working with, let me just say that you can’t really train “passing”, or “shooting” or a single concept with kids. It’s not fun to shoot for 30 straight minutes, or practice throw-ins or whatnot.

Best Soccer Conditioning Drills


Conditioning plays an increasingly more important role in today’s soccer, so if you ever want to become a pro, you’d best start working on your fitness and endurance levels from early on. Unlike popular belief, soccer conditioning drills are not just short-term, in that you can’t “forget” how to be fit like many states.

Indeed, if you stay off sports for a while and gain weight, or simply lose touch to your conditioning, you won’t be able to run for as long a time as before, your muscles will be weaker and you won’t have the same tonus. But you won’t have to start from scratch all over again, because once you’ve trained using soccer conditioning exercises before, it will be a lot easier to step up and get to that level of fitness again.

What’s the best way to do this? It depends on one’s constitution, but I will try to cover what I believe to be some of the best soccer conditioning drills, regardless of your build or natural fitness.

- Best Soccer Conditioning Drills - The Pine Tree Sprints

This soccer conditioning drill is called this way because you’re drawing a virtual pine tree on the floor with your sprints. It’s one of the most effective, all round exercises you could train with, because it works out both your burst sprints and your long sprints. Here’s how to do it:

Place 5 marks on the field, aligned perpendicularly from where you’re standing and make sure the distance between them is equal. So, the first mark could be at 10 feet, the second at 20, the third at 30, fourth at 40 and fifth at 50. Or you could tone down the distance between each a little. Now, stand on the line and jump, pulling your knees to your chest. Either have a friend give you an audio signal (blow a whistle, clap hands, etc) or give yourself the green light and start sprinting for the first mark as soon as you land on the ground.

When you reach the first mark, do a quick break and turn and sprint back to the initial line. Now break and turn and sprint to the second mark and back. Do the same with all marks and when you reach the last one, start coming down again, to the fourth and back, third and back, and so on. This works your conditioning in so many great ways…you’ll be practicing acceleration on sprints with the short runs between the first 2 marks, longer sprints when running for the 4th and 5th marks and you’ll also practice your breaking (mobility).
